HEALTHY
MOUTH / Healthy Body
In
July of 1998, the American Academy of Periodontology
launched an effort to educate the public about
new findings which support what dental professionals
had long suspected: Infections in the mouth can
play havoc elsewhere in the body.
Since
July of 1998, evidence has continued to mount
to support these links. While more research needs
to be done to say definitively that people with
periodontal disease are at higher risk for developing
heart disease, stroke, uncontrolled diabetes,
preterm births and respiratory disease, periodontists
do know that periodontal disease is a bacterial
infection, and all infections are cause for concern.
Periodontal
bacteria can enter the blood stream and travel
to major organs and begin new infections. Research
is suggesting that this may contribute to the
development of the following conditions :
Heart
Disease
Several theories exist to explain the link between
periodontal disease and heart disease. One theory
is that oral bacteria can affect the heart when
they enter the blood stream, attaching to fatty
plaques in the coronary arteries (heart blood
vessels) and contributing to clot formation. Coronary
artery disease is characterized by a thickening
of the walls of the coronary arteries due to the
buildup of fatty proteins. Blood clots can obstruct
normal blood flow, restricting the amount of nutrients
and oxygen required for the heart to function
properly. This may lead to heart attacks.
Another
possibility is that the inflammation caused by
periodontal disease increases plaque build up,
which may contribute to swelling of the arteries.
Researchers
have found that people with periodontal disease
are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary
artery disease as those without periodontal disease.
Periodontal
disease can also exacerbate existing heart conditions.
Patients at risk for infective endocarditis may
require antibiotics prior to dental procedures.
Your periodontist and cardiologist will be able
to determine if your heart condition requires
use of antibiotics prior to dental procedures.
Stroke
Additional studies have pointed to a relationship
between periodontal disease and stroke. In one
study that looked at the causal relationship of
oral infection as a risk factor for stroke, people
diagnosed with acute cerebrovascular ischemia
were found more likely to have an oral infection
when compared to those in the control group.
Preterm
Low Birth Weight Births
For
a long time we've known that risk factors such
as smoking, alcohol use, and drug use contribute
to mothers having babies that are born prematurely
at a low birth weight.
Now
evidence is mounting that suggests a new risk
factor - periodontal disease. Pregnant women who
have periodontal disease may be seven times more
likely to have a baby that is born too early and
too small.
More
research is needed to confirm how periodontal
disease may affect pregnancy outcomes. It appears
that periodontal disease triggers increased levels
of biological fluids that induce labor. Furthermore,
data suggests that women whose periodontal condition
worsens during pregnancy have an even higher risk
of having a premature baby.
All
infections are cause for concern among pregnant
women because they pose a risk to the health of
the baby. The Academy recommends that women considering
pregnancy have a periodontal evaluation.
Diabetes
People with diabetes are more likely to have periodontal
disease than people without diabetes, probably
because diabetics are more susceptible to contracting
infections. In fact, periodontal disease is often
considered the sixth complication of diabetes.
Those
people who don't have their diabetes under control
are especially at risk. A study in the November
issue of the Journal of Periodontology found that
poorly controlled type 2 diabetic patients are
more likely to develop periodontal disease than
well-controlled diabetics are.
Research
has emerged that suggests that the relationship
between periodontal disease and diabetes goes
both ways - periodontal disease may make it more
difficult for people who have diabetes to control
their blood sugar.
Severe
periodontal disease can increase blood sugar,
contributing to increased periods of time when
the body functions with a high blood sugar. This
puts diabetics at increased risk for diabetic
complications. Thus, diabetics who have periodontal
disease should be treated to eliminate the periodontal
infection.
This
recommendation is supported by a study reported
in the Journal of Periodontology in 1997 involving
113 Pima Indians with both diabetes and periodontal
disease. The study found that when their periodontal
infections were treated, the management of their
diabetes markedly improved.
Respiratory
Diseases
Bacterial respiratory infections are thought to
be acquired through aspiration (inhaling) of fine
droplets from the mouth and throat into the lungs.
These droplets contain germs that can breed and
multiply within the lungs to cause damage. Recent
research suggests that bacteria found in the throat,
as well as bacteria found in the mouth, can be
drawn into the lower respiratory tract. This can
cause infections or worsen existing lung conditions.
People with respiratory diseases, such as chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease, typically suffer
from reduced protective systems, making it difficult
to eliminate bacteria from the lungs.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE CITIES PROSMILE
DENTISTRY SERVES:
About
Foothill Ranch: Foothill
Ranch was a census-designated place in Orange County, California,
United States. The population was 10,899 at the 2000 census.
Foothill Ranch was annexed into Lake Forest, California
in 2000. Foothill Ranch is notable for such company headquarters
as Oakley, Inc., Wet Seal, Kaiser Aluminum, Risa Technologies
and Saddleback Church. Foothill Ranch includes the zipcode:
92610
About
Lake Forest: Lake Forest incorporated
as a new city on December 20, 1991. Residents voted to name
the city Lake Forest, after two expensive master planned
residential communities, denying the longer claim to the
territory by the community of El Toro. Since being founded,
it has expanded its limits to include the newer communities
of Foothill Ranch and Portola Hills. The multiplicity of
names often creates confusion: some people in the Portola
Hills neighborhood, for example, can receive mail addressed
to them at Portola Hills, Lake Forest, or Trabuco Canyon.
The zip code 92679 is a Trabuco Canyon zip code even though
not a single area in the zip code is Trabuco Canyon. This
might be because since 92679 is assigned to the northeastern
area of Rancho Santa Margarita and the southern area of
Lake Forest it would be too confusing for the postal services
because 2 cities are both served by that zip code. Lake
Forest (along with its neighboring cities Mission Viejo
and Irvine) is ranked as one of the safest cities in the
country. The private research firm Morgan Quitno ranked
Lake Forest as the 15th safest city and another firm later
ranked Lake Forest 10th in 2007 in the United States. Lake
Forest includes the following zipcodes: 92609,
92630.
About
Mission Viejo: Located
in South Orange County, Mission Viejo is a planned community
that once had cattle grazing on its hillsides. The land
was purchased from the O’Neill family nearly half a century
ago, and the first homes were built in 1966. By the late
80’s, Mission Viejo became a city, and now houses almost
100,000 residents. Locals enjoy activities at the Mission
Viejo Lake, shopping at The Shops at Mission Viejo and the
Kaleidoscope Courtyard, and their biggest celebration of
the year at the July 4th Street Fair. The community is also
proud of their world renowned Nadadores swim team and Saddleback
Community College, which offers some of the best golf courses
in the county. Mission Viejo includes the following Zipcodes:
92675,
92690, 92691, 92692, 92694.
About
Dove Canyon: Dove
Canyon is a gated community in Rancho Santa Margarita. Dove
Canyon boarders the Cleveland National Forest and is best
known for its choice golf courses. Residents enjoy the outdoors
at the Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park and the Wagon Wheel
Park Bike Trails, as well as a variety of community and
family events such as the Boo Bash and Holiday in the Park
Dove Canyon includes
the zipcode: 92610
About
Irvine: Irvine
was originally a home to livestock and later crops of barley,
lima beans, asparagus, avocado, oranges, and strawberries.
The huge planned community that remains today was originally
from James Irvine’s plot of land in the mid 1800’s: the
Irvine Ranch. After The University of California Irvine
(UCI) was established in the 1960’s, the development of
Irvine’s characteristic housing plots was underway. Today,
nearly 200,000 people call Irvine home, making it the largest
planned community in the nation. Irvine is known for its
clean and regulated suburban neighborhoods, as well as the
Irvine Spectrum shopping and entertainment center, Wild
Rivers Water Park, and the outdoor concert arena – the Verizon
Amphitheater. Irvine includes the following zipcodes: 92602,
92603, 92604, 92606, 92612, 92614, 92616, 92618, 92619,
92620, 92623, 92650, 92697, 92709, 92710
About
Rancho Santa Margarita: Before
it was owned by the O’Neill family, Rancho Santa Margarita
was home to Shoshonean Native Americans. RSM is one of the
many planned communities in Orange County and is also one
of the newest, having become a city in 2000. The community
known as “A Small City with the Soul of a Small Village”
is the perfect place for families and today nearly 50,000
people call it home. Community activities such as the Fourth
of July Celebration and the Summer Concert Series are favorites
among residents. Rancho Santa Margarita includes the following
zipcode: 92688
About
Portola Hills: Portola
Hills is a small community located just north of Rancho
Santa Margarita. Portola Hills offers fantastic mountain
views and quiet living for singles, couples and families
in Orange County. Residents enjoy swimming, tennis, basketball,
and volleyball at the brand new Concourse Park. The community
is just minutes from various shopping centers and marketplaces.
Portola Hills includes the following zipcode: 92679
About
Coto De Caza: Coto
De Caza is one of the oldest planned communities in Orange
County and is located in Rancho Santa Margarita. Coto De
Caza offers a beautiful landscape of Oak trees, hills, trails
and parks such as the Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park and
the Wagon Wheel Park Bike Trails. The Coto De Caza Sports
and Recreation Park serves as a community center for various
events, concerts and activities. Portola Hills includes
the following zipcode: 92679
