COMPLETE
AND PARTIAL DENTURES
|
|
DENTURES
Complete and Partial
|

A
denture is a removable replacement for missing
teeth and surrounding tissues. Two types
of dentures are available – complete and
partial dentures. Complete dentures are
used when all the teeth are missing, while
partial dentures are used when some natural
teeth remain.
|
Complete
(Full) Dentures There are two different
types of complete dentures; immediate and conventional.
Immediate dentures are typically made when the
patients existing natural teeth are being removed
and the new dentures are delivered the day of
the extractions.
Conventional dentures are typically made when
existing dentures are being replaced. A conventional
denture is ready for placement in the mouth about
8 to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed.
Unlike conventional dentures, immediate dentures
are made in advance and can be positioned as soon
as the teeth are removed. As a result, the wearer
does not have to be without teeth during the healing
period. However, bones and gums shrink over time,
especially during the healing period following
tooth removal. Therefore a disadvantage of immediate
dentures compared with conventional dentures is
that they require more adjustments to fit properly
during the healing process and generally should
only be considered a temporary solution until
conventional dentures can be made.
Partial Dentures
A removable partial denture or bridge usually
consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink
or gum-colored plastic base, which is connected
by metal framework that holds the denture in place
in the mouth.

Partial dentures are used when one or more natural
teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw. A fixed
(permanent) bridge replaces one or more teeth
by placing crowns on the teeth on either side
of the space and attaching artificial teeth to
them. This "bridge" is then cemented into place.
Not only does a partial denture fill in the spaces
created by missing teeth, it prevents other teeth
from changing position. A precision partial denture
is removable and has internal attachments rather
than clasps that attach to the adjacent crowns.
This is a more natural-looking appliance.
Are There Alternatives
to Dentures? Yes, dental implants can
be used to support permanently cemented bridges,
eliminating the need for a denture. The cost is
usually greater, but the implants and bridges
more closely resemble the feel of real teeth.
Dental implants are becoming the alternative to
dentures but not everyone is a candidate for implants.
Consult your dentist for advice.

WEARING
DENTURES:
- unless
instructed otherwise, dentures/partials
should not be worn at night; the oral tissues
need time to rest,
- when
your dentures/partials are out of your mouth,
they should be kept in a moist environment;
place the denture/partial into the container
provided and add a small amount of water,
- do
not place the denture/partial or container
in direct sunlight or on any appliance that
emits heat,
- when
wearing a lower complete denture, the tip
of the tongue should rest on the front,
inside plastic of the denture base just
below the teeth.
CLEANING
DENTURES:
- your
dentures should be thoroughly cleaned on
a regular basis with a denture cleanser
(cream or paste) and a brush; also, periodically
soak your denture in a denture cleaner,
such as Efferdent or Polident,
- stubborn
stains on complete dentures may be removed
by soaking in a solution of 8 oz. water
and one tablespoon of Clorox for 15 minutes;
this should never be used on partial dentures
(with metal clasps, etc. ),
- remember
to brush your ridges, palate and tongue,
- clean
your appliance over a bath basin that is
partially filled with water (this will reduce
the probability of breakage if you drop
the appliance),
- if
your denture/partial has a soft liner, use
a very soft brush and gently scrub the tissue
bearing surface.
EATING
WITH
DENTURES:
- adhere
to a soft diet for the first 7-10 days;
GO SLOW,
- at
first, rely on your knife and fork for most
of your chewing; eat slowly and deliberately,
- it
is very important to chew your food bilaterally;
divide your bite of food and chew on both
sides,
- front
denture teeth are primarily for looks, it
is rare to be able to eat com-on-the-cob
and apples without difficulty.
PROBLEMS
/ SORE SPOTS WITH DENTURES:
- you
should expect a diminished biting force
and a loss of touch and temperature sensations,
- an
increase in salivary flow, speech problems,
gagging and biting the cheeks and tongue
are normal adjustment problems; these will
normally resolve within 6-8 weeks,
- all
dentures produce sore spots; when sore spots
occur, you may remove your appliance and
rinse your mouth with warm salt water, and
always call the office for an adjustment
visit; it is important to never attempt
to correct the problems yourself

INFORMATION ABOUT THE CITIES PROSMILE
DENTISTRY SERVES:
About
Foothill Ranch: Foothill
Ranch was a census-designated place in Orange County, California,
United States. The population was 10,899 at the 2000 census.
Foothill Ranch was annexed into Lake Forest, California
in 2000. Foothill Ranch is notable for such company headquarters
as Oakley, Inc., Wet Seal, Kaiser Aluminum, Risa Technologies
and Saddleback Church. Foothill Ranch includes the zipcode:
92610
About
Lake Forest: Lake Forest incorporated
as a new city on December 20, 1991. Residents voted to name
the city Lake Forest, after two expensive master planned
residential communities, denying the longer claim to the
territory by the community of El Toro. Since being founded,
it has expanded its limits to include the newer communities
of Foothill Ranch and Portola Hills. The multiplicity of
names often creates confusion: some people in the Portola
Hills neighborhood, for example, can receive mail addressed
to them at Portola Hills, Lake Forest, or Trabuco Canyon.
The zip code 92679 is a Trabuco Canyon zip code even though
not a single area in the zip code is Trabuco Canyon. This
might be because since 92679 is assigned to the northeastern
area of Rancho Santa Margarita and the southern area of
Lake Forest it would be too confusing for the postal services
because 2 cities are both served by that zip code. Lake
Forest (along with its neighboring cities Mission Viejo
and Irvine) is ranked as one of the safest cities in the
country. The private research firm Morgan Quitno ranked
Lake Forest as the 15th safest city and another firm later
ranked Lake Forest 10th in 2007 in the United States. Lake
Forest includes the following zipcodes: 92609,
92630.
About
Lake Mission Viejo: Located
in South Orange County, Mission Viejo is a planned community
that once had cattle grazing on its hillsides. The land
was purchased from the O’Neill family nearly half a century
ago, and the first homes were built in 1966. By the late
80’s, Mission Viejo became a city, and now houses almost
100,000 residents. Locals enjoy activities at the Mission
Viejo Lake, shopping at The Shops at Mission Viejo and the
Kaleidoscope Courtyard, and their biggest celebration of
the year at the July 4th Street Fair. The community is also
proud of their world renowned Nadadores swim team and Saddleback
Community College, which offers some of the best golf courses
in the county. Mission Viejo includes the following Zipcodes: | |
